    Design a Renewable Future Competition

    Narec, AV Festival, Newcastle Science Fest and Newcastle Science City would like to invite schools to participate in a New and Renewable themed competition.

    We are looking for teams of up to 5 Key Stage 3 students to develop a way of encouraging society to think about the importance of renewable energy and of the reduction of mains power.

    VOICE NORTH contributes to NSC’s Innovation machine

    Newcastle Science City (NSC) enlisted the help of Voice North to inform and shape the new innovative businesses it aims to create over the next three years.

     Thirty members volunteered to share their experiences of daily life to feed in to NSC’s Innovation Machine which aims to create companies by providing solutions to problems.

    North East’s most innovative biotech companies celebrated

    A Newcastle company which has developed an advanced system to protect embryos during IVF treatment has won a prestigious award for its innovation.

    Vitro Safe Systems, based at Newcastle University, won the CELS Business for Life Innovation category for its interlinked incubator system designed to protect embryos from external conditions during IVF treatment. It picked up the award at a ceremony held at the Gateshead Hilton in November.

    Researchers creating technology to aid social cohesion

    A research unit in Newcastle is developing technology to ensure vulnerable members of society are included in the digital revolution.

    The team of researchers at the Digital Economy Research Hub, based at Newcastle University, is using a £12m grant from the UK Research Council to develop technology that could help vulnerable people access the advantages of an increasingly digital world.  Newcastle Science City, which helps the city capitalise on scientific innovation, has endorsed the hub’s work as a valuable social and economic driver for the region.

    Heaton School Research Tyne's Shipbuilding Glory

    All of the River Tyne’s proud history of shipbuilding was explored as part of a Heaton Manor School’s Spring science project which was presented to an audience of parents and VIP guests.

    Over thirty 12 and 13 year old students learnt about a wide range of different elements of the river from its wildlife and ecology to the port and what environmental aspects helped to build the huge shipbuilding industry on the Tyne.

    The students visited the Port of Tyne and the Dove Marine Laboratory in Cullercoats to help with their research.

    Kielder is out of this world for young Gosforth students

    One hundred and thirty 11 and 12 years old pupils from Gosforth Central Middle School had a science lesson about space which was out of this world at Kielder Water & Forest Park’s Observatory.

    This trip was part of a Newcastle city-wide initiative to make science as interesting and stimulating as possible for students.

    Scientific secrets of skyscapers revealed to students

    The secrets behind the construction of the world’s most dramatic buildings and how they stay up, brought physics to life at St Cuthbert and Sacred Heart RC High Schools in Newcastle.

    Over 250 pupils aged 11 and 12 years old at both schools had physics lessons where they learnt about forces through examining bridges and buildings such as the high rise blocks in Dubai and structures like the Tyne Bridge.

    Science on the shopping list at Gateshead MetroCentre

    Shoppers at Gateshead’s MetroCentre enjoyed a science lesson with their day out as part of Science and Engineering Week. Over 17 different organisations and 230 primary and secondary schoolchildren took part in the science in the malls day which was arranged by The Thomas Hepburn Community School to encourage more people to become interested in science. Various schools put on scientific displays and experiments to showcase their own projects including models of the planets and solar systems and a chance to look at a live sea creatures and the consistency of frozen daffodils.

    Science City photo winner's big day

    Seven year old Jacob Daglish took 31 of his schoolmates for a free trip to the International Centre for Life as part of his first prize in a Newcastle Science City schools’ photo competition.

    The pupils from Ravenswood Primary School, Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne started their big day out with a ‘rubbish’ rocket-making workshop. They all made their own rocket out of paper and launched them to see whose creation went the furthest and Jacob was one of the winners for that as well!
