    Newcastle scientist to address Microsoft Conference

    The two global IT giants Google and Microsoft have invited a Newcastle University computer scientist to their major conferences in Seattle, USA, because they were so interested in his work on ground-breaking ‘cloud’ technology.

    Brewery consultation gives positive feedback

    Over 180 residents and local businesspeople attended Newcastle Science City’s masterplan consultation sessions with the majority of people very much in favour of the ambitious plans for the former brewery site.

    The sessions held in St James Park and St Matthews Church Hall, Summerhill started with an overview of the plan to create a new science quarter in the city centre and then the audience divided into small groups to give their individual views on the £700m development.

    Walker pupils get food for thought

    Eleven year old Walker Technology College pupils had great food for thought with a Newcastle Science City themed lesson about food chains in the North Sea.

    Organised by the Dove Marine Laboratory, the ‘Food for Thought’ interactive food webs game gives the pupils an idea of how food chains and webs are formed. It also lets them see the potentially catastrophic result of affecting even just one organism, plant or animal, in the system.

    Desert Island survival tips for pupils

    Young pupils, 10 – 12 years old, from Gosforth have no fear of being shipwrecked on a desert island with their new lifesaving skills learnt in a practical science lesson on Cullercoats beach, North Tyneside.

    The lessons, part of Newcastle Science City’s education work, taught the 10 – 12 year olds from Gosforth East Middle and Gosforth Central Middle Schools how to find food on a beach and get drinking water from sea water.

    Next step for Newcastle Science City masterplan

    The next stage of the public consultation on Newcastle Science City’s plans to create Europe’s finest science quarter on the former brewery site takes place next week, Tuesday 8 July 2008.

    Scientific expert helps beacon hill pupils learn to love science

    Wallsend’s Beacon Hill School pupils are going to learn about science and the environment with a ‘wow’ factor thanks to the start of a unique partnership between Newcastle-based scientist Sarah McLusky and the school.

    Sarah, a self-employed biochemist is going to work with the pupils, many of whom have severe and profound learning difficulties, to bring her work experience into the classroom and she is starting with plant life cycles in a new pond on the school site.
