News feared by many for months – the replacement of One North East – was announced and George Osborne’s emergency Budget firmly reinforced the era of austerity we are entering, while also offering capital gain incentives to new entrepreneurs.

    We face a challenge, undoubtedly, but the North East has overcome serious economic obstacles before.

    The North East has the infrastructure in place to help the region capitalise on the development of some of Europe’s biggest offshore wind fields which will provide the country with thousands of megawatts of green electricity.

    The wind conditions in Dogger Bank and Hornsea – Round Three developments more than 100 miles out to sea are among the best in Europe and the establishment of Narec (the National Renewable Energy Centre) in south Northumberland also means companies will be able to develop the cutting-edge infrastructure to maximise their seaward investments.

    A £170,000 fund to directly finance community-led programmes has been unveiled by Newcastle Science City to improve the accessibility and understanding of science in neighbourhoods – particularly in deprived areas – around the city.

    Building Success Stories was the first in a series of workshops hosted by Newcastle Science City, designed to help entrepreneurs and SMEs make their ideas or technologies market-ready.
