University and businesses will be coming together to boost the region’s economy at an event being hosted by Newcastle University.

Businesses will be given access to the University’s cutting-edge expertise to solve problems and explore new technologies that may help the business grow in an ever competitive market.

Newcastle University, Newcastle Science City, the Technology Strategy Board and Enterprise Europe Network are joining forces to organise the “Working with Newcastle University” event on Tuesday, May 22 at St James’s Park between 9am and 1pm.

Newcastle Science City is seconding Dr. Andrew Young, a senior figure from Newcastle University, to lead the project in a move that will strengthen developments in the city’s key areas of research.

Dr. Young, who heads the management support team for the University's Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering (SAgE ), will take up the secondment as interim Director next month with a focus on science-based projects in sustainability, ageing and health, and regenerative medicine.

A team of academics and business experts have pooled their knowledge to provide the corporate world with a crucial health kick and create highly engaged, healthy workforces.

EIP Group has been developed by entrepreneur Neil Cameron, alongside academics from Newcastle, Northumbria and Durham universities to provide a new service aimed at improving the profitability and performance of companies by focusing on the health and wellbeing of their employees.

An innovative wound dressing developed by a North East entrepreneur is now being used in hospitals in the region and will soon be helping improve patient safety across the country.

Ged McGonnell, managing director of medical device company G-MED UK, has developed a safer way for medics to provide care for critically ill patients with the help of Newcastle Science City and two intensive care nurses from University Hospital of North Durham.

Thousands of university students and museum visitors are exploring their surroundings in a new way using their mobile phones thanks to the cutting edge technology of a North East company.

Just by holding up their phone and using it to look around them, mobile users can view information about their location on their smartphone screens including photos, videos, audio, 3D models and can even obtain directions on how to get to the place they are viewing.

Universities and businesses must also be given as much freedom as possible to innovate. We look forward to hearing more from the Government on how this aspiration will be achieved.

Newcastle’s international relations have been boosted following visits from His Excellency Georg Boomgaarden, the German ambassador to the United Kingdom and from one of our twin cities, Nancy in France.

Each of the visits which took place this week gave the city the chance to showcase initiatives like Science City and the Ouseburn Valley Regeneration, discuss economic and cultural cooperation, develop closer ties with our universities and look at some of Newcastle’s European projects which include our city’s young people.
