In April 2009, the three partners behind the Newcastle Science City vision came together to establish Newcastle Science Company Ltd. This small team is tasked with taking forward the City's ambitious plans.
Based at Citygate in the former Newcastle University Business School, the Newcastle Science Company aims to capitalise on cutting-edge scientific resarch for the economic and social benefit of Newcastle and the surrounding region.
The team work with partners across the region to achieve three key objectives;
- To ensure that Newcastle is synonymous across the world with excellence in three scientific fields; ageing & health at Newcastle University's Institute for Ageing & Health; stem cell & regenerative medicine at The International Centre for Life; and sustainability, which will be the focus of the Science Central site. All of this supports the attraction of investment into the city.
- To create prosperity for the city and the wider egion by maximising the potential of science-based businesses. To achieve this we support the creation of new businesses and jobs and assist drive existing businesses to innovate and grow.
- To work closely with the local community, particularly young people, to ensure they can become part of, and benefit from, our city's continued scientific achievement.
To achieve this Newcastle Science City has developed five key strands of work,
- An in-house Business Development Team which provides support for regional business using a unique insight-led business model
- Community engagement, education and skills - a series of programmes which aim to engage the local community in science
- Promoting our science - a proactive strategy aimed at telling the world about Newcastle's scienctific excellence and supporting the attraction of investment into the city
- The Innovation Machine - a programme which enables budding entrepreneurs to create new innovative businesses
- Science City Ambassadors - this activity is central to everything that we do, and aims to strengthen science-based networks across the city, encourage people and businesses to get more actively involved and help to create 'one voice' for the science community in Newcastle and the wider region
