Business & IP Centre Newcastle: the one-stop-shop for anyone who wants to start, run or grow their business

Small business owners and entrepreneurs looking for free advice to grow and develop their business are being urged to make the Business & IP Centre Newcastle their first port of call.

Offering a wide range of expert advice and guidance, the Business & IP Centre Newcastle is a one-stop-shop for anyone who wants to start, run or grow their business.

Based in the City Library, in the heart of the city-centre, the Business & IP Centre Newcastle has helped around 1,600 individuals over the last year.

It provides free access to a wide range of business and intellectual property databases, market research, information on funding sources, patents, trademarks, registered design and copyright, as well as specialist advice, one-to-one mentoring and networking opportunities and events.

Luke Burton, Manager of the Business & IP Centre Newcastle, said: “We’re here to support entrepreneurs, innovators and businesses from that first spark of inspiration to successfully launching and developing a business.

“We’ve got all the tools, expert advice and information to help grow and develop your business – whether it’s protecting your business idea through intellectual property, developing a new product or checking the commercial viability of a product – we’re here to help. The centre is free and everyone is welcome to visit.”

One of the businesses to have benefited from the guidance of the Business & IP Centre Newcastle was Northumberland-based Bespoke Concrete Products Ltd, a manufacturing company specialising in custom made pre-cast concrete and cast stone products.

They approached the centre looking for information on how they could protect their designs through design registration and for guidance on their project; NITECRETE™- a glow-in-the-dark concrete they wanted to patent.  This innovative new product uses technology to keep concrete surfaces luminous for hours.

Martin Kay, Managing Director from Bespoke Concrete, said: “We knew that we had a great idea with NITECRETE™ and we wanted to not only bring into market, but to protect our idea, as there is such huge potential for this product. The help we got from the Business & IP Centre was invaluable – good straightforward advice and a passion to help us succeed.

“Using their expertise and guidance, we now have a product that is attracting world-wide interest. The Business & IP Centre is a great resource and I would recommend businesses to use it to develop their potential.”

Luke further added: “As well as ensuring that businesses have the basics to bring their new ideas to market, it’s also a great opportunity for like-minded local business owners to come together to share best practice and create new networks. We’ve a vast amount of support here at the Business & IP Centre and the best thing is that it is all free. All you need to do is get in touch and we’ll work out the best way to help you develop your brilliant idea.”

The Business & IP Centre Newcastle is a partnership between the British Library, Newcastle City Council, Northumbria University and Newcastle Science City, which is supported by the European Regional Development Fund.
