City of the Future

Our overarching vision is to establish Newcastle Science City as one of the world’s premier locations for the integration of science, business and economic development.

In order to establish a physical presence, the Newcastle Science City Partnership acquired the former Scottish and Newcastle brewery site in the heart of Newcastle city centre in 2005. Demolition has now been completed on the 19 acre site, and a Masterplan is currently being finalised.

The masterplan is a document that outlines the use of land and overall approach to the design and layout for the development site, in order to provide detailed guidance for subsequent planning applications. In January 2007, a masterplanning consortium, led by EDAW, was commissioned by the Newcastle Science City Partnership. The masterplanning process and timetable are outlined here.

The proposed development will act as the strategic hub of Newcastle Science City – its role, in both city and regional terms, being transformational. The site will be pivotal in helping create a new economic sector for the city and will create a new major science district within the city, centrally located and well-connected to other transformational activities. We have named this ‘Science Central’.
