Next step for Newcastle Science City masterplan

The next stage of the public consultation on Newcastle Science City’s plans to create Europe’s finest science quarter on the former brewery site takes place next week, Tuesday 8 July 2008.

Local residents, business owners and leading figures in the community who played a key role in helping to shape the masterplan during a detailed consultation exercise in Autumn 2007, will be given the opportunity to give their feedback on the proposed development. They have been invited to attend briefing sessions explaining how their views were incorporated into the masterplan and to answer any questions they may have.

Peter Arnold, chief executive, Newcastle Science City said: “The people of Newcastle were extremely clear about what they wanted to see in our development and we will be presenting them with our initial plans for the site which encompass their views and our own vision.

“During the consultation people were keen for this new science quarter to be part of their city and not a remote academic campus. Our masterplan has a series of gateways and large public spaces to welcome the local community into its heart, so the development can both help regenerate the West End and extend the city centre at the same time.

“Whilst science research and development will be core uses on this site, they will be complemented by a rich mixture of residential, commercial, retail and leisure opportunities to make this a new city centre quarter.”

The 19 acre Gallowgate site will be home to Newcastle University Research Institutes, Newcastle College’s new School of Applied Sciences, a specialist business support hub and state of the art facilities for small start up science companies as well as inward investors.

In the masterplan family homes and apartments for local people as well as students are planned to be alongside scientific businesses and world-leading research facilities.

Details of the masterplan are available on the Newcastle Science City website on www.newcastlesciencecity.com.
