International low carbon lighting solution launched in the North East

Low Carbon Lighting, a North East company, is set to disrupt the traditional street lighting market internationally with the launch of Luxon, a new solution that massively reduces carbon emissions, delivers huge cost efficiencies and eradicates the problem of light pollution.

 

Supported by Newcastle Science City, Low Carbon Lighting will officially launch its low carbon lighting solution, “Luxon”, at an event that marks the anniversary of Sir Joseph Swan’s first public demonstration of the first ever electric light in 1879. The Luxon launch will take place on Thursday 3rd February 2011, at The Literary and Philosophical Society in Newcastle upon Tyne - the same building as the 1879 event.  To mark the occasion, Christopher Morcom, a direct descendent of Sir Joseph Swan, will be switching on the first Luxon street light in the world at the event.

 

Newcastle Science City has been instrumental in helping to develop the product and in taking it to market as part of its Newcastle Innovation Machine project.

With EU targets set to reduce carbon emissions by at least 20 per cent by 2020 and recent reports of local councils across the UK having to dim down or switch off street lights to hit carbon reduction targets, eco-friendly lighting is becoming ever more important. 

 

It is estimated that traditional lighting is responsible for a fourth of all electricity consumption (₁) worldwide and that specifically, street lighting across the whole of the UK, results in more than a million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually(₂).

 

In addition, councils across the UK are typically paying four times as much for their electricity today as they were five years ago, while simultaneously facing pressure to significantly cut expenditure following harsh budget cuts. 

 

Luxon offers a green solution to standard street lighting by providing a low carbon LED alternative which:

  • uses up to 70 per cent less electricity than standard street lighting;
  •  provides huge cost efficiencies (minimum 75 per cent less maintenance and operating costs than standard street lighting);
  • Has a much longer life span - 50,000 hours versus less than 8,000 hours for standard street lighting;
  • Better colour recognition – minimum 70 per cent reproduction of natural light;
  •  Higher brightness; and
  • Instant start - versus 10 minute warm-up which complements responsive technologies.

 

Tim Cantle-Jones, chief executive of Low Carbon Lighting, said:

 

“There is an increasing pressure on local authorities and large companies to reduce the spiralling electricity costs associated with their lighting while tackling the environmental pressures of light pollution and CO2 emissions. The introduction of the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) scheme has forced them to rethink their approach to carbon reduction or face heavy financial penalties.  As a result, we are already experiencing huge interest in Luxon as it solves a number of problems with one solution.  Luxon has already being been tested by a company managing some of the largest street lighting contracts nationally and the feedback we have received is very positive.”
