Science is for life not just for Christmas

1 science city

Newcastle is a science city. We have always been a city of science – the centre of a region alive with scientific endeavour and discovery. The legacy continues today with Newcastle designated as one of six UK cities of science in recognition of its world-class strengths.

2 passionate partners

Newcastle University and Newcastle City Council are the driving forces behind the Newcastle Science City partnership – bringing together the worlds of academia and business with local communities. The partners are committed to maximising the city’s scientific strengths and promoting them to the rest of the world.

3 areas of scientific excellence

As a science city we already have state-of-the-art facilities for our key growth areas of stem cell & regenerative medicine at the Centre for Life, ageing & health at Newcastle University’s Institute for Ageing and Health, and now Science Central will become the focus of our expertise in sustainability.

4 strands of activity

The Newcastle Science City partnership focuses on four key areas:

 • Inward investment for science, including the Science Central site

 • Marketing Newcastle’s science and expertise

 • Supporting businesses, particularly those with high growth and science related activities

 • Community engagement to promote the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)

500 companies supported

Our business support team has been developed with a single-minded objective – to accelerate high-growth, science-related businesses. We’ve worked with hundreds of regional companies to commercialise new insight-led ideas, helping them to innovate and grow.

6 million pounds a-secured - £6m secured for Science Central

The Government has boosted plans for Science Central with a £6million investment. The money will be used to help transform the former Scottish and Newcastle Brewery site into a science hub where university scientists will work alongside business to create spin-out firms and attract new investment into the area.

7,000 residents a-participating

Our community engagement activity has benefited thousands of residents across the city via science education and skills programmes as well as events designed to enable residents to use science to help drive change in their neighbourhoods.

80 students a-learning

Newcastle is the UK’s first university to develop an overseas campus offering full UK medical degrees in-country. In November it opened the doors of its Malaysian Medical campus with 80 undergraduates enrolled to train as doctors.

9 nonogenarian’s a-dancing

The ground-breaking Newcastle 85+ Study, a major study of the health and ageing of the oldest old population, is just one example of the pioneering work being carried out by Newcastle University’s Institute of Ageing and Health to uncover the challenges facing our ageing population.

10 academics a-leading - themes of NIReS

Europe’s leading centre of expertise in the principles and practice of sustainability – that’s the ambition of Newcastle University. Its Newcastle Institute for Research on Sustainability (NIReS) is focused on internationally-leading research around 10 cross-cutting thematic areas including energy, water and transport.

11 years a-chieving – Centre for Life

Over 500 people from 34 countries now work within the pioneering science village that is the Centre for Life, with scientists, clinicians, educationalists and business people coming together on a daily basis to promote advancement of the life sciences.

12 science champions - 12 community projects
