Scientist Dr Glen Kemp joins business support team
Businesses and entrepreneurs in the North East can now benefit from the commercial expertise of scientist Dr Glen Kemp who has joined the Science City business support team.
Glen, who has a PhD in microbial biochemistry, has 20 years’ experience working in the fields of healthcare and life sciences – having spent 14 years in product and process development with global R&D company Merck Millipore.
He then joined the Centre of Excellence in Life Sciences (Cels) to create a £4m world-class protein analysis facility before becoming a director at Dream Laboratory, a commercial support organisation promoting trade between the UK and China and specialising in the healthcare and biotechnology sector.
Glen said: “I’ve worked with Science City in a number of capacities in recent years and have long admired the work and passion of the team so it is a pleasure to join them and have the chance to bring to bear my experience to benefit the important activity that is under way.
“The need to support the phenomenal science we have going on in the region is something I feel very strongly about as I believe our proud history of innovation is key to our economic future. There are some brilliant ideas being generated by some brilliant minds and I look forward to helping create successful pathways to take those ideas to market.”
Glen’s role as business support manager at Science City will be focussed on helping businesses find and develop commercial solutions in Newcastle’s science themes of ageing, sustainability and medicine – the big growth areas in society, which are areas of strength for the city and are most in need of innovative thinking for future sustainable development.
Simon Green, head of business support at Newcastle Science City, said: “Glen’s experience of working within and alongside companies ranging from start-ups to multi-nationals gives him a perspective which will be invaluable to the region’s business community.
“The breadth and depth of his expertise in the life sciences and healthcare sector is very impressive and we are really excited to have him on board to share this knowledge to benefit the region.”
