Dave is leading Newcastle Science City’s activities in the Business & IP Centre Newcastle project, in collaboration with Newcastle City Library and Northumbria University. The Centre is designed to support entrepreneurs, inventors and small businesses from that first spark of inspiration to successfully launching and developing a business.
The Business & IP Centre Newcastle is the first regional centre based on the British Library’s model, and the project follows a successful 18 month pilot during which time over 1,600 entrepreneurs used the Centre. Dave’s role is to help businesses to commercialise their ideas and IP. The project covers businesses in any area of technology, design or IP and although based in Newcastle City Library, support is available to businesses across the whole of the North East region.
As a Chartered Accountant and Corporate Financier with over 25 years’ experience in technology start-ups for over 25 years, Dave brings with him a wealth of experience. He was one of the founders of Symbian, a £120m joint venture between Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola and Psion. Dave then set up his own corporate finance consultancy, helping to raise start-up finance for a number of university spin-outs.
Moving to Newcastle in 2003, Dave worked on the Strategy for Success programme for One NorthEast, and has worked on business support and economic development projects with Codeworks, Cels, NStar and Entrust.
