Newcastle Innovation Machine

One of the key regeneration success factors for Newcastle and the North East is to create sustainable high-growth science and technology based companies.

Newcastle Science City alone has been tasked with creating 500 new companies by 2025. The Newcastle Innovation Machine project will create the novel innovation city-wide approach to achieve this ambitious target. NIM will be a cross-cutting project as it will work with various science and research communities in the city. It will rely on other continuous investment in science excellence proposed in this investment plan and elsewhere in the city. NIM proposes a new approach to commercialisation by focusing on unmet needs. Currently, the majority of public funding spent on commercialisation funds “technology push” approaches.

The value proposition of NIM is to develop a systematic way of identifying unmet needs, identify solutions and create compelling businesses and spin these off with finance. This project will create and attract new businesses and attract business and commercialisation talent to the city.
